Bernie Sanders is a self described socialist.
How many Americans understand socialism? Precious few. To me it means caring about your neighbour...more than just self. Period. What's wrong with that? Me me me is better? No. Marx's ideas were brilliant. He was a smart man. In terms of implementation...I'd be the first to admit that it's never been done anywhere properly. Soviet Union was a dictatorship, not democratic. Bernie is solidly into democracy. That means fairness
. North Korea is a dictatorship - and a pretty crazy one - but that has nothing to do with Marx or socialism.
Canada and many European countries have embraced elements of socialism and they're better for it. Health care...what a fiasco in the United States. Bizarre. Better now than it was. Here in Canada I just present a card, and I get treatment. Here health care is regarded as a right, not companies juicing you for everything you're worth. The move to privatizing everything - education, prisons, water, you name it - is messed up. Corporations don't do anything better. Generally much worse, because their motive is profit. As soon as money is the highest priority, things get really messed up. Public education under the government is socialist. It means kids don't get books trying to sell products. (That's attrocious. Disgusting. It's not education.)
In the United States, a few own most of the country. Does that benefit everyone? No. The masses are annoyed. That's why Bernie - a very decent and I think wise man who wants the best for everyone - is very likely to become President...and a fine President. He will set about waging war on all the Bernie Madoffs. And once he does that...he's gonna be surrounded by applause. It'll be deafening. It's time for another American revolution. The alternative is worse and worse for the majority.
