In this part of the country where I live, these poles are very popular, not just for mountain trekking, it use for any kind of trekking.

It is use for stability while hiking. Better balance as well. Some people with vision problems will use this to help them get around, it not like a cane, but help them with their balance, even those who have hearing problems will benefits from these device.

Can be use all year-round, in snow too, there is a piece that can be added to the pole so that you have better balance walking through the snow, really useful for mountain hiking where there are lots of snow and make walking go smoother and faster.

Any age use them for walking and hiking, seniors too.

Not recommended with walking your dog/s.
