When you meet someone new, it's only natural that the two of you will make quick judgments of one another within the first few seconds. The way someone will initially feel about you depends on many different factors. If you'd like to make a positive first impression, here are a few tips you should follow.
Be Positive
The way you act toward the other person will definitely shape their first impression of you. It's important to be friendly and smile so that you show off an appealing side of your personality while putting the other person at ease. Don't start your first conversation complaining about traffic, work or any other challenges you're facing, as this can quickly give the other person a negative impression of you.
Be Confident
Showing confidence is a great way to make a person more interested in getting to know you. You should make eye contact and speak with a clear and confident voice to show that you are fully engaged in the conversation. Keeping your body language relaxed can show additional self-confidence. It's important, however, to recognize the fine line between confidence and cockiness so that you don't make the mistake of being too pushy. You can also demonstrate confidence by situating yourself in the middle of a room instead of hiding off by the wall.
Keep it Simple
The short and sweet approach usually is the best way to go. A simple greeting along with asking the other person how they're feeling is one of the best ways to break the ice and make a great first impression. Rambling on about your life story within the first few seconds of meeting will likely make the other person feel bored and less interested in carrying on a conversation with you. You may also feel tempted to use a cheesy pickup line as a way to be creative, but this will only likely putt off the other person.
Listen
No one likes a person who doesn't listen and constantly interrupts someone while they're trying to speak. Even though you may be excited to express all your thoughts, you should give the other person the equal opportunity to say what's on their mind so that the two of you can enjoy a well-balanced conversation.
Dress Appropriately
You don't necessarily have to wear the fanciest or most expensive clothes, but you should still dress well if you'd like to make a solid first impression. Your clothes should be cleaned and preferably ironed before you step out the door. Clothes with busy pattern or jarring colors may deter people from wanting to talk to you.
Groom Yourself
Practicing good hygiene and grooming can work wonders on you quest of getting to know someone new. Properly bathing and brushing your teeth are important to eliminate any unwanted bodily odors. Your hair should be styled so that it doesn't look disheveled. If you have facial hair, you may want to consider shaving it off or at least trimming it down so that it looks more hygienic.
Being mindful of a few things about your demeanor and appearance can set you up to make a great first impression on someone who may potentially become a new friend or romantic partner.
