Obscure Daily Holidays to Celebrate This March

With Easter falling in late April this year, March will be a month without any major holidays to commemorate. Other than enjoying a few drinks on St. Patrick’s Day, it would seem as though there’s nothing to celebrate. This, however, is far from the truth! Though many are unofficial, silly, or not widely celebrated, there are a number of special days worth acknowledging this month. Get into a festive spirit and celebrate a few of these less-recognized March holidays!

March 1st - Pig Day

Usually celebrated in the midwestern United States, Pig Day is a holiday that was started by two sisters in 1972. The pair believed that pigs deserved to be acknowledged as “one of man’s most intellectual and domesticated animals.” Visit a petting farm or zoo to say hello to a pig this month, or simply take a moment to be grateful for pigs, bacon, and barbeque ribs!

March 2nd - Dr. Seuss Day

Dr. Seuss is one of the most prolific children’s book authors of all time. On March 2nd, grab a copy of The Cat in the Hat or watch a film based on his work, like How the Grinch Stole Christmas or The Lorax. You’re never too old to appreciate the poetry and messages of the brilliant Theodor Seuss Geisel.

March 7th - Cereal Day

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, many of us have begun skipping breakfast. Those of us who do eat breakfast may choose other breakfast options, such as eggs and meat or fruit and yogurt. Cereal, however, will always remain a delicious breakfast staple! This month, buy a box of your favorite cereal and enjoy it for breakfast or as a bedtime snack. Whether you enjoy a simple oat muesli or a bowl of sugar-coated corn flakes, March 7th is the day to celebrate your love of cereal!

March 11th - Napping Day

Studies have repeatedly shown that most adults are chronically sleep-deprived. Though all of us should strive to get more sleep each night, an afternoon power nap can also be a great way to recharge. Sip a glass of chamomile tea and lay down for a rejuvenating nap on March 11th! You’re never too old to enjoy a good snooze on the couch.

March 14th - Pi Day

With the American-style date often written as “3.14,” March 14th is celebrated as Pi Day. This mathematical constant defines the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. As an irrational number, pi (π) cannot be expressed as a common fraction. To celebrate the day, see how many digits of pi you can memorize! Watch a mathematically-inspired movie like An Invisible Sign or A Beautiful Mind. Bake and enjoy a slice of circular pie today, too!

March 20th - International Day of Happiness

Building strong relationships, being kind, and helping others are great ways of spreading joy in this world. This March 20th, take steps to promote your own personal well-being and the happiness of those around you! Smile, compliment others, and take care of your body. Donate your time and resources to those in need. Focus on mindfulness and meditation and spend some quality time with those you care about. From March 20th onward, dedicate your entire year to spreading positivity. Doing so will make the world a better place!

March 21st - World Poetry Day

Poetry is one of the most beautiful forms of written expression. Throughout the centuries and across cultures, poetry has been used to express ideas, tell tales, and communicate the joys and sufferings that are a part of the human condition. Celebrate World Poetry Day by returning to some of your favorite poems or exploring the work of a poet, current or past, whom you’ve never read before. Consider writing a poem of your own or attending a poetry slam in your local community. Take a moment to appreciate poetry this March 21st!

March 22nd - World Water Day

For those of us living in the developed world, water is something we rarely think about. Unfortunately, in many parts of the world, individuals have limited access to clean, safe water. Marginalized groups, such as women, disabled individuals, refugees, and indigenous peoples, often have particularly limited access to water. 2019’s World Water Day theme is “leaving no one behind,” with a focus on creating available, sustainable sources of water for all by 2030. Commemorate World Water Day by drawing attention to the fact that 2.1 billion people still live without safe water in their homes. Ultimately, legal and regulatory systems must change to help marginalized groups gain better access to clean and safe water. Take a moment to learn more about safe water and share the information with your friends and family. By drawing attention to this issue, you will be paving the way towards changes in the future.

March 26th - Make Up Your Own Holiday Day

Are you tired of being told what to celebrate this month? If so, March 26th is the day for you! On this day, individuals are encouraged to make up a holiday of their own. Run a quick Google search to make sure your holiday doesn’t already exist. If it doesn’t, make it official yourself! Come up with some holiday rituals and traditions and commit to celebrating the holiday in the years to come. Let your imagination run wild and have fun!

March 28th - Something on a Stick Day

On March 28th, enjoy your favorite meals served on sticks! Serve kebabs or skewers with meat or vegetables on them. Enjoy sweet treats like lollipops, popsicles, cotton candy, cake pops, and ice cream bars on sticks! Put fruit, cheese, and other snack foods on skewers and dip them in melted cheese or chocolate. If you’re looking for a challenge, try serving all of your food on sticks for the day. Can you do it?! If so, congratulations!

Though few of these holidays are particularly serious in nature, it can be fun to celebrate something new each week! Instead of simply waiting around for Easter and the start of spring, start celebrating these holidays from March 1st onwards! At the end of the month, you’re sure to have had fun and made some incredible memories.
